Reinterpretacje [Reinterpretations]
Eight photographers took part in the photography workshops "Reinterpretacje" [Reinterpretations], held between May and September 2024. Under the guidance of Bartek Warzecha, a renowned photographer and visual artist, they worked on photographs whose main axis was contemporary theatre and the phenomena and processes connected with it.
„From the very beginning our aim was to look at theatre in a new way, to reach people, spaces and objects that are normally inaccessible or are not associated with theatre at all, yet are connected with it. In many cases photography became a pretext for meetings and for discovering new layers – emotions, tensions, gestures, symbolism, which are often invisible at first glance but constitute the true power of theatre” – summed up Bartek Warzecha.
The „Reinterpretacje” workshops were held as part of the 10th edition of the Theatre Photography Competition. The photographers chose to capture contemporary theatre from various angles – some of them spoke of memories and loss through theatre interiors („Ghost light” by Karolina Jóźwiak), others focused all their attention on objects („Rekwizyty” [Props] by Anna Palusińska), on the relationship between humans and technology („Digital shadow” by Marcin Nalepa) and on trauma („Fragmenty” [Fragments] by Patrycja Stala). One of the projects sought to capture the theatricality of photographs posted on LinkedIn („Macierz jednostki” [Identity Matrix] by Magda Gramsz), while another, with the help of a drag queen, references archival theatre photographs („Grażyna” by Aga Bilska). The exhibition will also include portraits of people who are „invisible” in the theatre on a daily basis: Kraków dressers („Skene” by Mateusz Torbus) and lighting technicians („Cień światła” [Shadow of Light] by Kalina Sobesto).
