KONTAKT Z DUCHAMI [CONTACT WITH GHOSTS] is a project that develops over time. The result of the work is a collection of photographic portraits of people with whom I establish communication in defiance of online algorithms. Working on this series, I examine the mechanisms by which social media function, while at the same time trying to step outside that system and provoking situations of authentic contact. The photo session becomes a pretext for a real meeting and a live conversation. It is therefore an occasion for reflection on the condition of contemporary human relationships, threatened by the erosion of bonds in favour of virtual presence.
The title of the exhibition refers to the futuristic story Ghost in the Shell, which spins philosophical reflections on the existence of conscious beings that inhabit the digital world like ghosts. It is hard, however, to determine how much of such an existence is humanity and how much is computer program. Contemporary contact via social media resembles communing with such an ephemeral being – appearing and disappearing, creating successive versions of itself, where the boundary between a real human being and a virtual avatar becomes ever more blurred. The photo session thus becomes a moment of regaining corporeality and an attempt to come into being in the real world. It arises from the collaboration between the photographer and the person portrayed – one side expresses itself, the other tries to capture it and to mark its own impression and point of view. A face-to-face meeting breaks the illusion of virtual contacts and allows a moment of presence beyond the digital filter.
KONTAKT Z DUCHAMI [CONTACT WITH GHOSTS] says that technology not only changes the way we communicate but also undermines the foundations of human relationships. A real meeting becomes an exceptional experience, one that has to be worked for, one that has to be invented. The paradox of the present day is that, despite the apparent availability and connectedness between people, to justify real contact with another human being one has to reach for elaborate strategies, including artistic ones – to create situations that become a pretext for conversation and for sharing a moment.
Wojciech Ulman
Visual artist, photographer, filmmaker, video performer.
A graduate of the University of the Arts in Poznań - in Photography and in Intermedia. He experiments mainly with film and sound forms and with photography. In his work he often takes up existential and relational themes, juxtaposing them with the challenges of the internet era. He exposes the absurdities of reality, looks for harmony in chaos and seriousness in play. The creative process is important to him, and he readily reveals its circumstances as an inseparable backdrop to the final result of his work.
