We invite everyone thirsty for travel on a summer transfer from plac Hallera to wintry Antarctica.

Antarctica lies very far away. It is visited mainly by scientists with a very practical aim – studying the impact of our presence on Earth on the climate of our planet. Though it is sometimes hard to believe, not everyone realises where on the map of the world this continent is located, and a classic mistake is to associate it with the polar bear. But no wonder – it is hard to get there even for seasoned travellers. We want to invite everyone who dreams of such a distant expedition to plac Hallera and, during the Polish summer of 16 July – 4 September 2022, transport them to wintry Antarctica, both today's and that of several decades ago.

Our guide around the litmus paper of our planet will be Stanisław Rakusa-Suszczewski. The initiator and founder of the Polish Arctowski research station, who regardless of the social and political circumstances strove to develop Poland's research capabilities. He will be accompanied by penguins, a whale with krill, sailors, researchers, artists, flying stones, Arctowski's coat and icebergs.*

The holiday transfer to Antarctica includes:

  • the exhibition: ANTARCTIC DIARIES – the experience of a walk across the Sixth Continent with Stanisław Rakusa-Suszczewski
  • accompanying events:
    • ICY THURSDAYS – meetings with scientists and travellers and screenings of unique films about the Antarctic and Antarctica
    • 21 July, 18:30 "The mysterious interiors of glaciers" – a fascinating expedition into the inside of glaciers led by Professor Piotr Głowacki
    • 28 July, 18:30 "Selma – a real adventure from the end of the world" – a screening of the film from the Guinness Record-crowned expedition to the southernmost point of open water, the Ross Sea, together with a meeting with members of the crew,
    • 4 August, 18:30 "My Antarctica" – a meeting with Professor Stanisław Rakusa-Suszczewski combined with a presentation of the archival film "Course South Georgia",
    • 1 September, 18:30 "Monica in action – remote sensing and telemetry in the Antarctic" – a talk by Dr Małgorzata Korczak-Abshire of the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Department of Antarctic Biology) about innovative technological solutions in Polish Antarctic research.
  • SCREEN PRINTING WORKSHOP – printing emblems with polar motifs together with the audience.

* At the exhibition you can assemble a booklet of curiosities about the climate and exploration of the Antarctic and take it home with you.

All events are free and open to everyone.
